Due to its unique geographical location and sheer variety of fascinating tourist spots, Can Tho continues to be one of the most popular tourist places in Vietnam.
Cai Rang Floating Market
Cai Rang is one of the best places to visit in Can Tho due to the vibrant atmosphere of the marketplace and sheer number of boats that gather every morning to do business. This market specializes in the buying and selling of fresh agricultural produce that is hung out on bamboo sticks for display. Visitors can also find certain vendors preparing simple but delicious delicacies in this market. The market opens up during the early hours of the morning and a visit here is a great way to start the day.
Binh Thuy Ancient House
Located about 5 km outside of the main city, this stunning home is a tourist favourite as it gives visitors an inside look into the history of Can Tho. Built by the Duong family in the typical French colonial style of architecture that Vietnam is now famous for, this structure was established way back in 1870. The home is approximately 6000 square meters long and has 5 rooms. Visitors can explore the house as well as the surrounding orchards and get a true sense what life in the rural countryside was like.
Bang Lang Stork Garden
Established in 1983, this is the perfect spot for nature lovers. About 52 km outside the city is the Bang Lang Stork Garden, an ecological space that is home to thousands of unique birds, most notably the white egrets. Additionally, visitors can find grey herons, ibis and painted storks here. Visitors are recommended to head up to the viewing tower here just around sunset to observe the flocks of birds flying back to their nests for the evening. This is a fun way to spend the day out in nature.
Can Tho Grand Prison
This prison holds great historic significance for being the spot where the French colonizers used to imprison, torture and often brutally execute Vietnamese soldiers and rebels. Later this same space was used during the Vietnam War by both the American and Vietnamese forces. The prison is comprised of 21 confinement quarters, a temple, and pantry and housing quarters for the inspector. This is a popular tourist spot for history and design enthusiasts.
Ninh Kieu Wharf
Situated a few minutes away from the heart of city is the Ninh Kieu Wharf. This wharf serves as the key trading centre and is also one of the most popular places to visit. It can be found on the bank of Hau River which serves as an offshoot of the larger Mekong River. The surrounding area is full of restaurants, bars and hotels, all overlooking gorgeous views. This is also a great spot to catch the sunset.
Tay Do Night Market
This market is another hotspot for tourists looking to get out and experience the nightlife of Can Tho. From delicious local cuisines to shopping for handicrafts, jewellery and clothes, there is something on offer for all visitors. The market continues to be a massively important trading point as well. The energy of the night market is what makes it a special place and it is not to be missed.
