The town of Nuwara Eliya is the administrative capital of the district of Nuwara Eliya. Characterized by tea plantations and its rich heritage, Nuwara Eliya was once a British hub. At an altitude of about 6000 ft, the town experiences a temperate weather for most times of the year. The temperatures range from 20 to 10°C on an average but can sometimes go as high as 30°C and as low as -2°C. Although there is no ‘dry’ season as such, the summers and winters don’t see much rain. Given that the Sri Lankan New Year and the Tamil New Year fall during the month of April and that this is the month with little precipitation and the most pleasant weather in Nuwara Eliya, April is considered as the best time to visit Nuwara Eliya.

The summer months are the hottest in the year and see little precipitation. The temperatures range from 13 to 23°C  but sometimes go up to 32°C. The summer season is considered as the tourist season in the region as most Sri Lankans also holiday during this time with the addition of tourists pouring in from the rest of the world. The season is marked by plenty of activities and parties that are never-ending. Although slightly warm weather prevails during the day, nights are very pleasant. The Sri Lankan New Year and the Tamil New Year fall in April and the place goes into a festive fever. It is undoubtedly the best time to visit.

The months of July through November experience the highest rainfall with precipitation ranging from 16 to 18 mm. The monsoon season plays an important role in bringing down the temperatures of the summer. If rain doesn’t bother you, this time of the year would be ideal for a budget holiday as the rates of accommodation and other services go down. The rains gradually subside and the temperatures decrease further, winter is the coolest time of the year. Nights can get rather cold and frosty but the temperatures rise with day-break. Winters also see a good amount of tourist in-flow with minimal rainfall and pleasant climates. The temperature during the season ranges from 15°C to 20°C on normal days but have been known to drop notoriously to as low as -2°C occasionally.
