Lonavala and Khandala are hill stations of the Sahyadri mountain ranges that lie in close proximity to each other. Khandala lies at the end of Bhor Ghat and connects the Konkan regions with the Deccan Plateau. About 3 km away is the hill station of Lonavala that is located in the district of Pune.

 

Mumbai Pune Expressway passes through Khandala and the location sees a fair amount of traffic and is thus easily accessible from neighbouring cities and towns. Mumbai Chennai Highway and Mumbai Pune Expressway pass through Lonavala and that too makes for an easy transit to the hill town.

 

The ideal way to reach Lonavala and Khandala would be by train.

The nearest airport is the Pune International Airport. Pune connects by flights to Chennai, Nagpur, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Goa, Kochi, Imphal, Kolkata et al. There are international flights to Abu Dhabi, Frankfurt, Dubai and Sharjah. You could hire a cab from the Pune airport to the hill towns. The other option would be to take a bus from the airport to Pune bus stand and board a bus to Lonavala or Khandala.

Most of the major trains that run on the Mumbai to Pune track halt at Lonavala and Khandala. Trains from cities like Chennai, Hyderabad, New Delhi etc that are bound for Pune halt at Lonavala and Khandala. You could board a train to Pune and alight at either Lonavala or Khandala. From the railway station an auto rickshaw can be hired to reach your destination.

 

Pune suburban railways connects Pune city to the towns in the neighbourhood. From Pune you can board a local train to Lonavala, as well.

It’s a breeze to drive to Lonavala and Khandala by road. The Mumbai to Pune Expressway is one of the most beautiful freeways on India, with some of the most amazing ghat sections, so you'd have a lovely drive to Lonavala and Khandala, as both the hill stations are but a few kilometres from one another.

 

Other options would be taking a bus to Lonavala Khandala from cities like Mumbai, Pune, Chennai, Bengaluru, Vijayawada or Hyderabad. There are MSRTC buses as well as private air conditioned seater, sleeper and Volvo Multi - axle air conditioned sleeper buses that run to Lonavala and Khandala from the neighbouring cities and states, so you could travel in comfort by road.

One of the best options for sightseeing and exploring the places are hiking, if you are on short distances. There are auto rickshaw and cab stands near the MSRTC bus station and the railway station that can be hired for getting around.
