While most people come here to relax and chill, newcomers who are visiting for the first time would want to explore the places in and around Digha. Let us take a brief look at the places to visit in the seaside town.
New Digha Beach
New Digha beach is a new beach in Digha that has been developed about 2 km from old Digha beach. This new beach is bigger, cleaner and better maintained and not as crowded or congested with shops like the old one. The old beach cannot be used as it is badly affected by soil-erosion and the beach has to be held together with stones and concrete steps. It also gets extremely overcrowded. The new beach is pretty to look at and to relax.
Marine Aquarium of Zoological Survey of India
The biggest inbuilt aquarium in India, the Marine Aquarium is a major tourist attraction in Digha. It houses species that are of conservative importance, freshwater species and local species. Kids will enjoy this outing as they will come across many sea creatures like sharks, rays, lobsters, butterfly fish, sea anemones, sea snakes and many more uncommon ones.
Located a mere 15 km from Digha, this is another beautiful beach and less crowded as well. It has some nice resorts located close to the beach. Taking a leisurely walk down the beach, watching the sunrise or sunset, the local sea boats heading home in the evening create those picture perfect moments. There are some temples located near the beach which interested tourists can pay a visit to.
This is a tranquil beach that is located on Orissa border nestled between New Digha beach and Talsari. Though a mere 3 km from Digha station, it is very different from the more commercial and crowded beaches of New Digha. Dotted with casuarina trees, this is a lonely and picturesque beach which tourists visit for some relaxed moments. Accommodation is also available, though not very luxurious in nature. You can even hire tents from West Bengal Tourism and OCEANA Tourist Complex.
This is another picturesque spot located close to Digha. Beautiful virgin beach lined with palm, coconut and cashew trees, the sea has calmer waves here. Calm and serene it is a favorite haunt for tourists looking for some peace. A fisherman’s paradise, the beach is not polluted or crowded. It is the destination for seafood lovers as one can get some of the best crabs, lobsters and prawns here. The interesting thing about Talsari is that is not just a sea beach, it also forms the banks of River Subornorekha which merges into the Bay of Bengal.
This is a beautiful park covered with lush greenery about a kilometer from New Digha beach. It has pristine lawns with a variety of seasonal flowers and a lake at the center of the park. There are walkways for taking leisurely strolls, seating areas, boating facilities and a ropeway ride that gives the visitors a stunning view of the surroundings. It is great for elders as well as kids for spending some quality family time.
The Chandaneshwar Shiv Temple is a popular pilgrimage center located about 6-8 km from Digha. The temple hosts a grand fair every year on the first day of Oriya calendar. It witnesses large number of pilgrims visiting the venue all through the year.
