Sitamarhi is considered by Hindus to be the place where Sita was born. Today Sitamarhi is a city and it is the headquarters of the district of the same name, located in the Tirhut Division. However, Sitamarhi has had a chequered history. In Sitamarhi you will find a sanctuary cut out from rocks dating back to the Mauryan era. While it was a sub-district in 1875, in 1972 it became an independent district. Visit the place during Ram Navami to get the full flavour of the region. The weather in Sitamarhi is temperate and warm. The best time to visit Sitamarhi is in winter when it is nice and cool.

Sitamarhi is virtually at sea level, just 70m above MSL. The maximum average temperature of Sitamarhi lies in the month of May when the temperature averages around 30°C and hits a maximum of 34.2°C. The rains come around June thereby cooling the place. The minimum temperature averages between 24.3°C in May and 25.6°C in June. However, the average temperature hovers around 28.2°C in September. It is best not to visit Sitamarhi during the hot summer.

Sitamarhi gets rainfall almost throughout the year. Therefore, while it gets about 31mm of precipitation in January it receives around 237mm of rainfall in June and 362mm in July. August also receives a fair amount of rainfall averaging about 314mm. These months are definitely very wet. It is advisable to stay away from Sitamarhi during the monsoon. The reason is that roads tend to flood during the monsoon season in Sitamarhi and navigation might become difficult. 

Winter months are absolutely glorious in Sitamarhi. The minimum temperature drops to 21.7°C in October and does not rise beyond 20.9°C in the month of April. So virtually one could visit Sitamarhi till the month of April. However, please note that the minimum temperature drops to between 9.2°C and 10.7°C in January and February. It is therefore advised that one takes woollens for really chilly nights. The days are wonderful during this period and one can walk to one's heart's content.
