Historically, Porto served as the focal point for trade and was one Europe's major ports. Today, the city is a bustling, multicultural tourist destination that is only growing in stature. The weather experienced here is moderate to pleasant throughout the year. June to September is the best period to visit the city as this is when the temperatures are the most well-aligned and there are low rainfall levels and windspeed. Winter and spring have higher tendencies to display erratic weather. Summer is when tourism is really at its peak in the city. The weather in the spring tends to be quite volatile in Porto. There are episodic heavy showers and thunderstorms alongside bouts of sunshine and well-balanced weather as well. Temperatures average around 20° C. This is not a highly recommended time to travel as the erratic weather might make outdoor exploration of the city a burden. Visitors are advised to carry an umbrella and dress appropriately.

This is the best and most popular season to visit Porto. Dominantly sunny skies, a cool breeze and temperatures averaging 23 to 26° C provide for ideal weather conditions for outdoor exploration and allow visitors to enjoy the city in all its glory. However, as the temperatures rise, there is the odd chance it might bring rainfall along with it. Heatwaves are a rarirty in the northern half of Portugal so visitors can dress normally but are advised to stay well hydrated.

The warmth of the summer continues into autumnn, making it another good season for travel to Porto. As the season comes to an end, temperatures tend to drop and Porto gets frequent but light showers which still makes for decent enough weather to enjoy the city. The temperature averages around the same as it does during the spring season. Visitors are advised to carry a light jacket as it can get a little windy post sunset.

It is a relief to know that Porto rarely ever experiences heavy snowfall during the winter season. However, this does not mean that the weather is particualy pleasant during this season either. The winter does see periods of heavy rainfall and strong winds that may hamper exploring the city. As December approaches, Porto is likely to experience single digit temperatures post sunset. Hence, visitors must be well clad at all times to avoid catching a chill.
