Lucerne is located in Central Switzerland with the beautiful Lake Lucerne as at its outfall. Its heavenly landscapes are what attract a huge crowd of tourists year after year. The weather in Lucerne is pretty predictable most of the time, with lows of -3°C in winter and highs of 24°C in the summer. The best time to visit Lucerne is between April and October when the weather is good to enjoy outdoor activities. However, there is a higher chance of rain during these months as well.
Spring (March to May)
The beautiful season of Spring lifts up your spirits especially when you are in Switzerland and witness the gorgeous landscapes that have turned green and colourful with flowers and the white mountain peaks at a distance. The average day temperature is 16° C and the nights can go as low as 2° C depending on the month you travel in, March being the coldest while getting warmer by May. There is a 20-30% chance of rain during these months so it is always good to carry spare clothing and an umbrella. May is the busiest month of the year in terms of tourism.
For comic book lovers, the Fumetto – International Comix Festival is held during springtime. The Zaubersee Festival and Lucerne Regatta are held in May.
Summer (June to August)
One of the busiest times of the year for Lucerne is the summer time, when tourists, expecting warmer weather, flock by the dozen to explore this magnificent city and country. The temperatures average at 20° C with lows of 13° C. Chances of rain are more during the summer months, but you will still find sunny days. There are many events and activities happening throughout the months. The bigger events include the Athletics Meeting Lucerne, which happens in July and the Blue Balls Festival also in July. An eclectic music festival called The Lucerne Festival in Summer happens during August & September.
Autumn (September to November)
Autumn is a good time to visit Lucerne if you want to avoid the crowds and yet enjoy pleasing weather. It also offers some beautiful musical entertainment. By mid-October, it starts getting quite cold and the crowd starts thinning. The average temperature during this season is 14° C with lows of 7° C. In November, this goes down to 2° C. Rain can be expected for 6 to 8 days in a month.
The SwissCity Marathon takes places in Lucerne every October. Musical festivals like the Blues Festival and Piano Festival happen in November. There is also a World Band Festival that takes place during the Autumn months.
Winter (December to February)
The winter months are cold and dark and do not make the best time to visit the city - nonetheless, if you want to experience snow or want to have a white Christmas, you would definitely have an enjoyable time. The average day temperature is 4° C and this frequently goes down to 0 or negative at night. It rains or snows 6 to 9 days in a month. Tourism is slow. Daylight is only for 8 to 9 hours.
A popular event around this time is the Lights Festival Lucerne-Lilu that is held in January. And of course, the festive spirit of Christmas and New Year set up quite a mood in December.
